Mr Bean's Holiday - Unoriginal, mostly unfunny, and no plot. A waste of time.
I was quite looking forward to this, as I am a very large Mr bean fan, and I loved his first movie (the ultimate disaster movie - very amusing), so I was grateful that Amber asked if we wanted to go to the cinema to see it. Unfortunately, I cannot summarise the story here as most cinema reviews do, as there isn't a story - see below - but then I am not The first thing that annoyed me about this film was the opening titles. The text that flies in to introduce the characters is quite annoying, and there is definitely no way that the 'credits' (text that tells me who should be shot for ruining Mr bean (a.k.a. the director/writers e.t.c) should continue over the actual movie for 10 minutes. Normally, these credits are in the first opening scene of the movie, in a sort of introduction, such as Narnia 2 for example. However, in this film, the text continues to fly in for at least the first ten minutes, distracting you from the story, characters and dialogue, which is very annoying. (I don't much like films that do this anyway, because I always watch the credits at the end of a film so I know who is the director e.t.c, meaning that it is unnecessary to put this info at the front of the film, over the opening scenes, which are, in my opinion, the most important). Secondly, there doesn't seem to be a plot. OK, so Mr Bean wants to go on holiday, and he eventually wants to get to the beach. On the way he makes a number of mistakes, and cocks up a lot e.t.c. e.t.c but this isn't really a plot, merely an outline of the story. Thirdly, it isn't actually that funny. As a Mr bean fan, I was expecting a good laugh, but I didn't get one. I managed to raise occasional smiles in the cinema, and laughed occasionally too, but it wasn't hilarious as I wanted it to be. This is mainly due to several reasons: there is nothing original in the film (except the dance bit, see below), as Mr bean has already done it in another episode/movie, or someone else has. There was none of the mr bean genius I wanted, where he uses what is around him to get what he wants in the end, and I knew exactly what to expect because it was really all in the trailer. It is one of these films where if you have seen the trailer (which obv I have), you have seen the while movie, and although the trailer did make me laugh, I didn't laugh in the cinema because there was nothing else funny to laugh at. However, there is always an exception, and thank goodness there is here as well: the dance scene where Mr bean busks is hilarious, brilliant and original genius.
